Fire symbolizes them being rescued and it will determine there survival in the island and getting off the island.

The fire is the strength, the survival and is the first step in being saved from the island.

They are relating the fire to a form of ritual and makes it into a more spiritual moment. Since there is a fire, the island is more alive.

They are creating stress, because if there is no smoke there is not way they will be saved.

The fire was a chance of them being rescued, and they had a chance. However, since the fire died the ship didn't see them. The smoke was there hope, no smoke; no hope.

Fire is the means by which they will be rescued , and therefore is there only chance at getting of the island.
